Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation. Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound. Kabir
Sound healing has been practiced for as long as there have been healers. It is fundamental to our bodies and our universe. That is why, I often use it during my classes. Yes, we are talking about singing bowls.
Singing bowls - also known as Himalayan bowls - are used in yoga, music therapy, sound healing, and religious ceremonies. The tone is produced by striking the side of the bowl with a wooden and/or leather mallet. By running the mallet around the bowl - only with slight pressure - a pure tone will eventually rise. When this happens, the bowl is said to sing - hence its name.

I personally love sound baths. Here you use big or heavy singing bowls set around a person or a group of people. The primary tone in singing bowls is the one you first hear when you strike it with a mallet. It is said that if someone has a lot of negative karma, this bowl won't give any sound. It gives sound but, not so nice, it's very small and not clear. If the person who rings it has pure karma, it gives a lot of beautiful singing.
I use Tibetan bowls after asana performance when the group is set up for the Shavasana. Their relaxed bodies are penetrated by the vibrations. The sound brings a magical experience to everyone. The use of bowls is usually incorporated into Yoga Nidra, which is also called a Yogic Sleep. It is a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping. It is among the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness.
Magic…
Himalayan singing bowls are infused with magic. Many bowls have the traces of gold, silver and other metals that impart the superior sound quality. Some bowls appear tuned and ring with such intense purity that the vibration is likely to heal.
No wonder why singing bowls are used for chakra’s healing. Chakras are said to have individual tones associated with them, tones very much in the range of singing bowls. One method commonly employed is to place singing bowls on chakra points and ring them, letting the resonance penetrate deeply. For instance, the heart chakra or area around the belly. During the individual sound experience, I like to put the bowl on the chest as a lot of childhood traumas are stored there. The vibrations are more likely to work with those traumas, allowing the participant to observe and accept the state of the feeling.
Healing is more about tuning in and feeling out what needs to be done. It transforms the energy in a totally natural way, without any interference of the ego. Through the singing bowls you actually do not heal but help to create a space that allows healing to take place. The healing will be whatever is necessary for you, at that time, and in those circumstances.
“The wound is the place where the Light enters you.” ― Rumi
